Pirate track and field heating up

April 25, 2024

COLFAX–The Pirate track team had two meets this week, competing in a 1B/2B league meet in Clarkston and at the MacDougall Invite. These are big meets with lots of competition with 11 schools competing at the league meet and 21 at the Invite with some larger classifications competing with the 1B/2Bs.

Pomeroy’s boys finished third with 81 points behind DeSales’ 97 and Colfax’s 104 at Clarkston, and the women were ninth with 16 points. At McDougall the Pirate boys tied for eighth with Gar-Pal at 30 points and the women were 16th with five points.

“Our kids competed well,” commented Head Coach Adam Van Vogt. “Fourteen of our athletes placed in Clarkston with eight of them placing in multiple events. Eight athletes placed at the Invite and Tyler Slaybaugh, Kaleb Miller, Levi Bowen, Jacob Reisinger, Boone Schmidt, and Jett Slusser placing in multiple events at this huge meet.”

Tyler Slaybaugh is “heating up” along with the weather, Van Vogt said. “He ran the fastest 200 that he’s ever run at 23.87 and vaulted his highest vault ever at 12’6” at the Invite. He also ran an 11.55 100 which is almost the same time as he ran at state last year.

Other Pirate athletes found a way to raise their game to match the competition this week, Van Vogt said. Personal bests were also set by Cash Copher in discus (70’6”), Santiago Lyden in the 400 (1:07), Kaleb Miller in the 800 (2:13), Cesar Morfin in the javelin (74’2”) and 100 (14.45), Jacob Reisinger in the 100 (13.07) and 200 (26.50), Jett Slusser in the 200 (25.17), David Tejero in shot put (37’8”) and javelin (122’5”), Robby Van Vogt in discus (80’3”) and javelin (87’4”), Haven Kimble in the 100 (15.35), and Natalia Larios in the 100 (15.84). Lucy Shields set personal bests in 3 events: the 100 (17.16), javelin (39’2”), and high jump (4’). Additionally, the boy’s 4x1 (47.45) and 4x4 (3:59) teams set season-best times as well. Our team had a great week of training and as we find ourselves in the back-half of our season it is really encouraging to see the marks going up and our times going down. We have two more meets this week and I anticipate more good things to come from this group.
