Pomeroy Jr. Hi does well at huge meet

April 25, 2024

POMEROY––Pirate Junior High track and field athletes stood out at an 11-team, 750-athlete meet here April 15.

"To place in a meet this big is a significant accomplishment and several of our athletes did so in multiple events," said Coach Adam Van Vogt.

Kaleb Miller placed in four events and took second overall in the 400 and the 800. Christian Ramirez also placed in all four of his events, capturing first overall in triple jump, third in long jump (out of 35 athletes), and fifth in the 100 (out of 43 runners). Kaleb and Christian also broke Pomeroy records as Kaleb's 800 and Christian's triple jump are now the top time and mark in recorded school history.

Miller and Ramirez were joined by Owen Wolf, who took first in the pole vault and placed in three events. Two sixth grade athletes placed as well, with Sam Bagby placing in two events (pole vault and 4x1) and Tyler Taylor placing in the triple jump.

Hollie Van Vogt was one of the few athletes at the meet to place in four events, taking second in pole vault and third in the 100 in addition to running on the 4x1 and 4x2 relays. Van Vogt's third in the 100 was out of 53 girls, an impressive placing.

Reagan Mckeirnan, who placed in three events, vaulted a personal best 6'8" enroute to winning the event. Her 6'8" vault places her at the sixth highest vault in the entire state for junior high regardless of classification. She also placed second in javelin despite just learning it earlier in the week and ran on the 4x1 relay.

Tatum Jones also picked up javelin earlier in the week and placed sixth. 28 girls threw javelin so for these girls to do so well with so little practice shows their natural aptitude in the event. Tatum also placed in three total events, running on both relays too.

Pomeroy placed three girl's relays total, with Reagan Mckeirnan, Hollie Van Vogt, Tatum Jones, Brianne Davis, Nataly Mckeirnan, Sophie Miller, Emma Phelps, and Willow Bowen all running on at least one relay. Ariah Bingman ran on both relays to place in two events on the day. Overall we had 20 jr. high athletes compete and they did great! Our next meet is on Monday, April second at home and I look forward to seeing these kids build on such a great first meet.
