Pirates clobber Touchet Indians, 62-8

October 10, 2019

POMEROY–The Touchet Indians were no match for the Pomeroy Pirates here last Friday, buckling under the impressive performances of Buc quarterback Brandon Bales and receiver Trent Gwinn, in a 62-8 league counter.

The 2-3 season, 2-2 league Pirates visit Mary Walker High School in Springdale this Friday with kickoff at 7 p.m. The Indians are 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in league.

The Pirates scored most of their points in the second period and capped the second half with a trio of touchdowns.

“Pomeroy put up 432 yards of total offense and held Touchet to 108 yards in a 62-8 league victory,” said Head Coach Kyle Kimble.

Bales counted five touchdowns on the ground in the victory and he threw three touchdown passes—all to Trent Gwinn. Bales rushed for 246 yards on 10 carries and was 4-5 (83%) passing for 97 yards and three touchdowns.

Gwinn counted 91 yards receiving on three catches and a touchdown each time.

Runningback Devin Noffsinger had 82 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.

Both teams jousted in the early minutes of the first quarter before the Pirates drew first blood when Bales got loose for a 60-yard scramble to the end zone at the five-and-a-half-minute mark. Gwinn punched in the point-after touchdown and Pomeroy took the lead, 8-0.

The Buccaneers got the ball back and scored again when Bales hustled 49 yards to pay dirt. Touchet stopped the extra point and the score was 14-0.

As the second quarter started, the Pirates put the kibosh on the Indians’ drive and ended their possession at 10:08 with another Bales touchdown run for 48 yards. Again Touchet stopped Gwinn’s extra-point attempt.

Touchet scored its sole touchdown in the second quarter when Bryan Vasquez ran the ball from 34 yards out. Indian Kayden Gallagher ran the extra point to make the score 20-8.

Pomeroy wasn’t finished with the second quarter. The Pirates’ next pair of touchdowns were both through the air, Bales hitting his favorite receiver, Gwinn. The first was a 22-yard pass, and on their next possession, Bales threw to Gwinn for a 26-yard touchdown. Bales ran the extra point on the first touchdown, but Noffsinger’s attempt on the second one was stopped by Touchet.

The Bucs scored in the waning seconds of the first half when Bales cut loose again from the 21. He also ran the conversion to make it 42-8 with six seconds remaining.

With the clock running in the second half, the Pirates notched three more touchdowns. Noffsinger outran the defense for a 42-yard score with 9:05 on the clock, and with the Bales two-point conversion, the Pirates were firmly in command, 50-8, with the running clock in motion.

After again quashing the Indian’s offense, the Pirate got the ball and with 4:52 remaining in the third quarter, Bales zipped a pass to Gwinn for a 43-yard touchdown. The PAT kick by Bales was no good.

Scoring in the game closed with Bales’s final rushing touchdown from 43 yards out. The PAT handoff to Brodie McGill was prevented by the Indians.
