A Teen's Take

October 17, 2019

POMEROY–The last couple of years I have changed, partially due to maturing, but also to fit into my peer group. It is sometimes difficult to make the transition into high school where friends, parents, teachers and coaches expect more of me.

I have found that my friends want me to be fun and outgoing while my parents want me to get good grades and do my chores. Teachers want me to do my homework and math notes as well as come in early in the morning to get extra help. Coaches want me to try me hardest in practices and games and be the best you can be. That takes a lot of time–seven to eight hours of school, two hours of practice and an hour of homework, there’s not much time for myself.

The demands I experience now such as being quiet in the classroom, not messing-around in practice and doing homework are not unfamiliar, but now seem more isolating. Fortunately, there is a bit of time, about 45 minutes, to talk and socialize with friends each.

Don’t get me wrong, I love school and wouldn’t trade sports for anything, but I miss being able to tell that joke from three years ago and reminded of the punch-line. It seems very few people know the real me though. They don’t know that I am a rule follower, but break them by testing my boundaries every once in a while. I hesitate when making a decision and sometimes choose poorly. I love mysteries and am quick-witted. My grandpa will vouch for that one.

I have discovered that I can’t please everyone all the time. So, for now, while I make my way through to adulthood, I am grateful for the people who do know the me and love me just the way I am.

I hope all of you are enjoying the wintery fall weather and are savoring football season while it’s here.
