POMEROY–Another solid Pirate win leads to the final regular-season game at Lyle/Wishram against the undefeated, 5-0 Cougars.

Pomeroy football is 5-2 and in third behind Tekoa-Rosalia, who fell to Lyle/Wishram last Friday 64-36, and first-place L/W. The Pirates' record actually places them in fourth behind DeSales but the Irish, who opted into the league this year, are ineligible for post-season play.

The Pirates travel to Lyle for the crucial meeting today, Thursday, November 7. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

Further post-season dates, opponents and venues will be determined by committee on Saturday, November 9. The winner of each division is automatically seeded into the 10-team bracket to state, and the remaining seven spots are by committee selection, according to Nettie Severs, athletic director.

"The win probably gets us into the playoffs," commented Head Coach Kyle Kimble.

"Our kids played pretty well tonight," Kimble continued. "Colton was down a couple of kids, but they still came out ready to battle and our kids stepped up and played really good defense. And we were firing on all cylinders on offense and things just went our way tonight."

The Pirates tallied 478 yards of offense on 31 plays with Junior quarterback Brandon Bales and sophomore Trent Gwinn providing the one-two punch.

Pomeroy quickly put doubt about the outcome of the game out of question. Bales shook off Wildcat pursuers for a 54-yard touchdown scramble at around nine minutes in the first quarter. After the Buccaneers held Colton, 5-11, 145-lb. running back Gwinn scored next, rushing from the 20 yard line. Just before the quarter expired, Bales again got loose from the Wildcat defense and scored from the 25, giving the Pirates a 22-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Bales scored two more times and Gwinn one more to give the Bucs a 46-0 lead and start the running clock. The Pirates scored two more touchdowns in the second half, one a 43-yard run by Bales and a 60-yard lope by Gwinn.

Pirate sophomore Trent Gwinn (13) caught this Brandon Bales throw and scampered to the end zone with no Colton defenders within five yards. Gwinn caught this 68-yard pass for six and also made three rushing touchdowns on a night with six carries totaling 101 rushing yards.
