Hospital Update

Have you had your flu shot yet?

December 5, 2019

With the cold weather upon us, we would like to share information with you about the flu season for 2019-2020.

What is the flu? Flu is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus that is contagious. When people who are infected with the flu cough and sneeze, the viruses becomes airborne and spread by inhaling droplets. This infects cells which multiply causing inflammation, lung damage and other serious respiratory complications that can lead to hospitalization and even death. People who exhibit symptoms of coughing, sneezing or nausea should be seen by their doctor.

What can you do to avoid getting the flu? Flu vaccinations are the best measure against contracting the virus as they have shown to reduce the risk of spreading the influenza viruses and may significantly decrease the risk of symptoms. Here are some recommendations from the Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) for other steps you can take to prevent getting the flu:

1. Wash your hands often by using soap or an alcohol-based rub.

2. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze and/or wear a mask

3. Stay at home when you are feeling sick to prevent spreading germs to others.

4. Avoid contact with people who are sick and keep your distance.

5. Practice good cleaning habits by disinfecting surfaces at home, work and school.

6. Practice good health habits by drinking plenty fluids, getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and managing stress to help your body’s immune system stay strong.

The staff at Garfield County Hospital District is proud to announce that they have completed 100% participation for flu vaccinations this year. Have you received yours? We strongly encourage our community members to contact their doctor or the clinic if they haven’t received a flu vaccination.

Our wish for everyone is to have a safe, healthy and happy holiday season!
