Byron Stallcop goes up for a shot, guarded by two Colfax Bulldogs. Stallcop sank seven baskets to lead Pirate scorers with 15 points, including one free throw, in Pomeroy's 74-39 loss to Colfax at home last Friday.

POMEROY–The Colfax Bulldogs came to town and put together four strong quarters to hand the Pomeroy Pirates a 74-39 loss in the season opener Friday.

The Pirates hosted Walla Walla Valley Academy Tuesday and St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse visits the Pirate court Friday, then the Buccaneers visit Palouse Saturday, Dec. 14.

Except for a strong third quarter, the Pirates were tepid in scoring.

"We are a young team to start this season and are playing a lot of freshmen. As they gain experience, I expect us to grow quickly as a team.

"Colfax is a quick team and we struggled to stay in front of them defensively and had too many breakdowns in our help defense," said Head Coach Chris Wolf. "Colfax was a big challenge for us this early in the season."

"Offensively there are a lot of new players playing together and we haven't quite gelled as a team yet," Wolf said. "We didn't see the passes when they were open and were late making them, which led to too many turnovers. We will be challenged by our non-league schedule which I hope prepares us for our league schedule."

The Bulldogs jetted to a healthy 19-9 lead after the first eight minutes and tacked on another 21 to finish the first half with a 40-17 lead over the Pirates.

Pirate guard Trevin Kimble, a 5-8 freshman, saw action in the Colfax game. The Bulldogs, according to Head Coach Chris Wolf, are a quick team and kept the Pirates busy trying to cover them defensively.

Pomeroy responded with some defensive adjustments and better production offensively in the third quarter, playing the Bulldogs fairly even, 16-14. But the Dawgs stomped on it in the fourth quarter, zipping further ahead with an 18-8 fourth quarter.
