A Teen's Take

January 23, 2020

POMEROY—Love is a complicated thing. Especially when you’re in high school. I hear more about “Oh he’s so cute” than anything else–I think. I don’t understand it.

I don’t know if there’s such a thing as you’re meant to be with one person only. I don’t know if I believe that love is anything other than a chemical reaction in our brains. I would like to believe it all, but it’s like Santa for teens and adults. You’re told so many different things and stories; ultimately, you have to figure it out for yourself. How do we really know?

When we are young, we are shown this idea of love, as a magical thing, that only the luckiest have and keep. In all the fairytales and princess movies, there was always a love interest. We grow up believing you’re going to have this type, which is all good and fine, but very distorted. I have a friend who grew up with this ideology and now has a ridiculous expectation of love.

Personally, I plan on living life the way I want and focusing on my career. If love stumbles upon me, great, but I have goals, and I’m not going to let anyone get in the way.

I hope everyone is having an amazing week and tolerating the cold weather.
