Braedyn White finished fourth at the Colbert meet last weekend, starting strong with two wins then was pinned in the third and lost a 9-2 decision for fourth place as coaches Ben Slaybaugh and Mat Slaybaugh watch intently.

COLBERT–Pomeroy wrestlers Braedyn White and Will Winona had respectable outings at the Northwest Christian Crusader Classic here last weekend, both Pirate grapplers finishing fourth in the 17-team tourney.

The Pirate Wrestling Team travels to Kittitas on Saturday for the Coyote Classic at 10 a.m.

Braedyn White, in the 170-lb class, started strong with two wins, then was pinned in the semifinal and lost a 9-2 decision in the third-/fourth-place match.

Winona, wrestling in the 182-lb. division, started with a win, then lost to a Mt. Spokane wrestler before rallying with two more wins in the consolation round before being pinned in the fifth match.

"Winona and White had some stellar moments but found some things they need to work on," commented Head Coach Ben Slaybaugh.

Dayton wrestler Carlos Norris "looked solid enroute to a second-place finish," Slaybaugh said. "He's quick on his feet and wrestled with a lot of control."

White (170) opened with a bye and then pinned Sven Rasmussen of Selkirk at 3:45. In the semi, J. Turner of Liberty pinned him at 1:07, then in the third/fourth match, S. Anderson of St. Maries outpointed White 9-2.

Winona (182) took the first match with a 2:51 pin over G. Merrill of Davenport. In the quarters, I. Giddings of Mt. Spokane went the distance for a 5-0 decision, bumping Winona into the consolation bracket.

There he pinned W. Corrigan of Wilbur-Creston at 2:55 and C. Sweeney of Rogers at 2:21. In the 4/5 match, S. Nelson of Liberty pinned Winona at 1:48.

Norris, the 138-lb. Dayton wrestler who competes with Pomeroy, finished second, pinned in the championship match versus S. Martin of St. Maries at 2:18. He defeated by fall H. Blank of Lakeside at :59 and A. Roberts of Liberty at 1:14.

Curtis Winona took his first 160-lb. match over J. Harp of Tekoa-Rosalia by an 8-1 decision. Then he was pinned by B. Burnett of Selkirk at :45 and in the consolation round, lost by fall to R. Cash of Davenport at 1:49.

At the Chiawana Dual Meet Jan. 11, Pirate wrestlers won two of five brackets at Pasco, one against Eisenhower JV and the other against Kennewick JV.

"It was a good tournament that allowed all of our guys to get lots of mat time," Slaybaugh noted. "Norris and White continued their strong season each placing first individually."

White pinned four and got a decision in one to win the 170-lb. division. He pinned J. Sartain of Eisenhower in :44, and E. Mendoza of Kennewick at :53. The 7-2 decision over F. Hedrick of Chiawana was before White Pinned J. Villarreal of Richland (2:13) and J. Lawrence of Rogers (2:40).

Norris cruised through the 138-lb. class with pins in all five matches. First was I. Kornagay of Eisenhower (:56); J. Campbell of Kennewick (2:00); G. Escalera of Chiawana (2:00); S. Shook of Richland (2:21) and Y. Ahmed of Rogers (:40).

Nick Hastings (132 lb.) lost to P. Mendoza then pinned K. Ball of Kennewick at 2:28. He lost the next three, to C. Miranda of Chiawana, B. Holcombe of Richland and M. Kreitzter of Richland.

Curtis Winona (160 lb.) lost by fall in his five matches, to E. Flores of Ike, M. Galaviz of Kennewick, B. Anderson of Chiawana, E. Yanez of Richland and G. Sampson of Rogers.
