Letters to the Editor

April 9, 2020

To the editor,

Welcome to the new normal. Where the once thriving service economy has taken a dump and socialism is looking pretty good. Also, now our super heroes are police, doctors, nurses, fire fighters, and grocery cashiers. At least we can still vote in this state, and for that, as well as all the heroes we have, I am grateful.

Locally, our politicians have been busy making sure we are informed voters by sending us pretty tables and power point pages. They love to display it over and over without really understanding what they’re asking us to do.

My favorite power point picture is the bar chart that shows that we property owners in Pomeroy and Garfield County have not been taxed as well as the other counties and should be able to afford MORE taxes from the promised levies coming down the pike. Wow, we have been deficient in giving money away to our government (how dare we!)

As a home owner, I’m actually rather glad for the low taxes during this crisis as it’s damned expensive to hide from the corona virus. Think about that at the polls and be sure to wash your hands after you vote. Above all be nice to the grocery cashiers, they really are the local heroes.

Jim Mahaffey
