With the retirement of Bob Johnson from the Garfield County Commission, a position on the three-man governing body is now open. Bob has represented the county well. Now I would like to fill the void that he leaves and am asking for your vote. It should be a close race, with two other qualified candidates also seeking the position. Whatever the outcome of the election, the county will be in good hands.

My decision to run comes from a deep love and respect for this county and its citizens. As a farmer who is reaching "older adult" status-I graduated from PHS in 1972-I have witnessed many episodes of our local history and been impressed by our community's "never-say-die" attitude.

Since I'm a product of a family who can claim seven generations who have called Garfield County home, my family roots run deep. Other than my days at Washington State University as a student and some years teaching agriculture in Bellingham and Lacrosse, I've lived and worked in Garfield County. Pam and I raised our family here and my son and grandsons now reside here.

The challenges our county faces are as great as ever. Balancing budgets and protecting our resources and way of life take a dedication of time and managerial skills. Throughout history, our citizens have met the challenge. Through the struggles of past generations, a wonderful, prosperous community has been created.

It still exists because of the quality of people who reside here. Today, as I write, we are still the only county in our state not touched by the corona virus. We should be proud of that and understand why we are so fortunate. We live away from the crowds and congestion in a healthy, pleasant environment. We should celebrate that uniqueness and build on that distinction.

As a substitute teacher in our local schools and a long-time school board member and church leader, I've had the pleasure of getting to know the young people of our county. We should constantly be working to improve our community's economy to provide employment for them as they reach adulthood.

As a farmer, I am familiar with the county's roads and infrastructure and appreciate the work the county employees do to keep our citizens safe and our travel efficient. And at times I have used the medical facilities our county offers and understand the need to guarantee that those services are maintained and improved.

In preparing myself for this campaign, I have attended many meetings to acquaint myself with the issues our county is facing. I've witnessed the hard work those folks are doing and think I am well prepared to join them and take on the challenges. I would dedicate myself to doing the best I can for this county and promise to be open and honest in my involvement and would listen and accept your inputs.

I'm ready to be your commissioner and work for this county. I'm asking for your vote. Thank you.
