COVID increase suspends Summer Session Athletics

November 12, 2020

POMEROY–In light of the increased COVID-19 activity in the community, the “Summer Session Athletics” program being offered by the Pomeroy School District has been suspended for two weeks beginning October 26.

The increased COVID-19 activity placed Garfield County in the high-risk category, according to protocol set by the WIAA, Department of Health (DOH) and Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

To be able to proceed with the Summer Session Athletics program, the county must be at a low to moderate risk for a period of at least 14 days.

The program was being offered as an after-school option for student athletes during the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA)-restricted sports schedule. The two-week suspension was reported by Rachel Gwinn, Superintendent, to the Pomeroy School District (PSD) Board of Directors at their regular monthly meeting October 29, 2020.

According to Gwinn, the staff and students of PSD have been doing well to keep themselves and others safe, and she continues to collaborate with the Garfield County Public Health District and the Garfield County Hospital District to keep updated on the current COVID-19 activity and community spread of the virus.

Plans to remain open for in-school instruction are still in place. Gwinn’s opinion is that the classroom is the safest place for students to be at the present. She reported that more students are coming back to school who have been participating in distance learning. September enrollment was 311, and October enrollment dropped to 309.

The board approved the resignation of Deedee Warren as Title 1 Para–pro. Sheree Robanske was recommended for a full-time bus driver position. New position openings include a Title 1–One-to-one Para Pro, and a two-hour cafeteria support position.

Gwinn shared with the Board the list of requests submitted to the Shepherd Foundation for consideration for the 2020-2021 grant cycle. The PSD’s requests totaled $34,000.

The PSD is discussing the possibility of offering some type of virtual Veteran’s Day celebration this year, as well as a virtual Christmas program.

The next meeting of the PSD Board of Directors was set for November 19, 2020, at 6 p.m. in the Shepherd Room of the Elementary School building.
