The last rays of a November afternoon reflect off Garfield County's majestic courthouse, its spacious front lawn bedecked with a creche depicting the Lord's birth in a Bethlehem manger. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, some traditional Christmas events will take place, while others have been canceled.

POMEROY––"The show will go on" might be a theme here this December as some holiday events will occur, with modifications, while other traditional events will be forsaken due to the concern surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the "shows" going on is the annual Twinkle Light Sale, which is in the works for the evening of Thursday, December 10. Downtown retail businesses such as Meyers Hardware, the Pomeroy Pharmacy and the Blue Mountain Artisan Guild are among the establishments which will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening.

Cancelled for 2020 is the Chamber of Commerce's Twinkle Light Parade and the Spinners' hosting of a community feed in Maple Hall, which traditionally included a visit from Jolly Ol' Saint Nicholas, plus numerous vendors. Also off the holiday schedule this year is the Holiday Homes Tour, another favorite event in the community. The parade and Spinners event would have been held Nov. 28.

A number of crafter's tables, displaced by the cancellation of the Maple Hall event, will be located in the BMAG gallery and at Pomeroy Pharmacy.

Both Meyers Hardware and the Pomeroy Pharmacy are offering shop-local specials during the two-hour shopping promotion. Meyers invites shoppers to take ten percent off any item in the store, and also to enter a drawing to win a flashlight. Another annual favorite is to guess the number of candies to win a $20 Bean Counter drink card.

At the Pharmacy, the lights will be twinkling with giftware marked down 30% between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Anything already on sale will be marked down by an additional ten percent to entice shoppers.

Check out both locations for delicious chocolate treats Friday and Saturday afternoons, December 11 and 12.

Patrons are urged to wear masks and practice physical distancing while shopping.
