Buccanneer defenders Braedyn White (25) and Trevin Kimball (42) put the stop on Wilbur-Creston's ball carrier, Nathan Wheeler (15), in action from Feb. 19's win over the WC Wildcats, the first football action for the Pirates since the pre-pandemic days of late 2019. It was a chilly one as evidenced by the snowy turf, but the Pirates, on strong performances by Trent Gwinn, Trevin Kimball and Colton Slaybaugh, dominated WC 34-24. WILBUR, WASH.–The Pomeroy Pirates rallied with 20 second-half points to pull off a 43-24 win over Wilbur-Creston here Friday in the first football contest played since the fall of 2019.

The Pirates host Wellpinit today, February 25, in the second game of the five-game virus-adjusted season.

"I was pleased with our team's performance and our resilience after WC took the early lead," commented Coach Kyle Kimble. "Our kids never lost faith in what we were doing, and trusted each other and our coaches throughout. Overall, it was a great game for the Pirates."

Kimble stress how great it was to be playing football and competing. "We were only able to practice two days last week due to terrible weather and our kids really persevered and prepared well for Wilbur-Creston.  It took us a little while to get our football legs back underneath us, but after Trent Gwinn's long touchdown run at the end of the first half, we seized all the momentum and never let up in the second half."

The Wildcats drew first blood with a 14-yard touchdown run by Peyton Michel at 9:45, but Pirate quarterback Trent Gwinn threaded a 20-yard pass to Trevin Kimble in response. The missed PAT left WC ahead 8-6.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the second quarter, heading into the break with a 16-14 Wilbur-Creston lead. Michel threw 19 yards to Nathan Wheeler for six plus the two-point conversion, and Gwinn scampered 65 yards to pay dirt with just :21 to play in the half. He added the two-point PAT.

The third quarter was all Pirate. The offense kept the Wildcats off balance, handing to Colton Slaybaugh for a 15-yard rushing touchdown midway through the quarter. The PAT failed but Pomeroy had the 20-16 lead.

On the next possession, Gwinn broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown run. Again, WC's defense stopped the PAT run, but the Buccaneers had a two-possession lead.

Both teams scored in the final stanza. WC's Beckett Odegaard rumbled 24 yards for the touchdown and PAT, cutting the Pirate lead to 26-24.

But Gwinn sashayed into the endzone from the five with a minute to play, and added the PAT to ice the 34-24 win.

The Bucs had 298 yards of offense versus 202 for WC.

The Pirate defense made several stops, forcing five Wildcat punts.

Gwinn completed five of eight passes (63%) for 42 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and rushed for 146 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns. WC's Michel made 12/29 for 41%, 101 yards, one score and one interception.

Colton Slaybaugh packed the ball 20 times for 93 yards, a 4.7 average and one TD. Trevin Kimble and Slaybaugh both hauled in two Gwinn passes to balance the attack.

WC's Odegaard and Wheeler both rushed for 53 yards, and Wildcat passing

Gwinn and Braedyn White were the leading tacklers, Gwinn with eight solo and White with 7 solo, and two sacks.
