Pickup fire on Hwy. 12 spreads, burns 20 acres

Flames from a Ford pickup (inset) east of Pomeroy ignited hillside grass which spread to 20 acres until the strategic firefighting maneuvers of the Garfield County Fire District No. 1 crews brought it under control. The cause of the vehicle fire is under investigation.

POMEROY–Garfield County Fire District No. 1 (GCFD) responded to a Ford pickup fire which had extended into the grass at mile post 415 on SR 12 at approximately 10 a.m.

First to arrive at the scene was GCFD Brush truck 5 followed by Brush trucks 1, 2, 3, 7, 9 and Command 8-1 that responded and contained the 20-acre secondary fire. Fortunately, the crews were able to extinguished the grass fire relatively quick. "While we were successful in quickly containing this fire, we would like to remind everyone that this is an unusual fire year and ask that everyone take whatever precautions they can to prevent fires from starting,' said Garfield County District No. 1 Fire Chief James Cleveland.

Fire units remained at the scene for mop up while EMS personnel returned to help cover the ambulance in town.

The cause of the vehicle fire is under investigation.
