A first: Pirates break 100 points against Touchet

October 7, 2021

POMEROY––In a rare occurrence for high school eight-man football, the Pirates scored over 100 points in a game for the first time in school history, soundly romping past the Touchet Indians here last Friday, 104-12.

The Pirates' Friday meeting at St. John has been canceled due to student-athletes from that school being ordered into distance learning due to covid, according the Athletic Director Toddette McGreevy. At this time, there is no information on it being rescheduled. Mark your schedules: kick off time of the Pirates' October 22 game at Yakama Tribal will be 3 p.m. on account of shortage of officials. The game will be played at Toppenish Middle School.

Pomeroy's fifth consecutive win of the season was another significantly lop-sided score showing the team's dominance on the gridiron. "We played well again tonight," said Head Coach Kyle Kimble. "Other than some foolish penalties and some breakdowns on special teams, our boys played great football all game long."

With 4:26 to play in the first quarter, Pomeroy had reached the mercy-rule running clock score of 48-6. "Most of the second quarter and all of the second half our younger guys got some good playing time and were able to move the ball and score on offense and stone them on defense," Kimble added.

The Pirates amassed 535 total yards of offense, 116 through the air with four touchdowns and 419 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Two Pomeroy touchdowns came through interceptions returned for touchdowns, another on a fumble recover and one via punt return for a score.

Touchet's outmatched Indian offense chalked up a total of -22 yards, the only touchdowns scored on kick off returns by Alexis Gonzalez, one for 80 yards and the other for 82 yards. The Indian ground game was squelched at -26 yards and there was six yards gained passing.

The Pirates scored in first the 17 seconds of the game on a 57-yard Sid Bales run, Colton Slaybaugh running the PAT for two.

Bales scored the next time on a 61-yard run at 8:31 in the first, Trent Gwinn punching in the extra point for a 16-0 lead.

Touchet's Gonzalez returned the Trevin Kimble kick off and Pomeroy stuffed the PAT try, the score 16-6.

Early in the Pirates' next possession, Gwinn broke loose for a 95-yard touchdown scamper, then ran in the conversion: 24-6.

Pomeroy got the ball right back and scored again 13 seconds later on a Gwinn to Kimble 50-yard pass. Gwinn again ran in the extra point: 32-6 with 7:31 to play in the first.

The Indians had the ball and Slaybaugh read the pass play nicely, intercepting Owen Godinez's pass for six. Gwinn remained perfect on extra points: 40-6.

Touchet went three and out and the punt came down at midfield, received by Gwinn, who rambled 52 yards for paydirt. Braedon Fruh took in the two-point conversion to start the running clock: 48-6.

The first quarter ended quickly and on the first play of the second period, Gwinn hit Oliver Severs for a 40-yard touchdown. Gwinn passed to Slaybaugh for two and a 56-6 lead.

The reserves took over, Brodie Magill throwing to Fruh for a 24-yard score, but Braden Mings's extra point try didn't go: 62-6.

Next score was Fruh taking the handoff for a 10-yard punch-in, but Walker Flynn's extra point was no good: 68-6.

The defense came up with the next touchdown, Braden Mings intercepting and running it in. He ran the extra point for a 76-6 lead with 2:13 to go in the first half.

Kimble kicked the ball to the Indian 20 where Indian Isaac Tiscareno gathered it in and started a return which lasted 10 yards before he coughed it up and Braden Mings recovered it and ran in for a score. Magill's pass to B. Mings was good: 84-6.

Freshman quarterback Jett Slusser connected with freshman running back Jacob Reisinger from the two to make it 90-6. Reisinger's PAT run was stopped.

On the next kickoff, Alexis Gonzalez evaded Pirate tacklers for an 82-yard touchdown return, and the conversion failed.

The final third-quarter score was a 62-yard run by Fruh making it 96-12.

Early in the fourth quarter, Fruh got loose for a 29-yard end-zone scamper, with Slusser running in the PAT for the 104-12 lead.
