POMEROY––Pomeroy's Pirate Wrestling Team topped seven other teams to win the annual Christmas Tournament, and 182-lb. Braedyn White won four straight to win the weight class and an individual award here December 30.
Eight teams braved wintery weather conditions to compete in the Pirates' annual Christmas tournament, venturing to town to battle for the coveted Santa Hat, awarded to the weight class champions.
"It was a good day with four of the five Pirates placing in their respective weight classes," commented Pirate Head Coach Ben Slaybaugh. "We haven't had many matches on the season yet and the guys really showed some good things. I was pleased with how aggressive they went at their opponents."
Braedyn White was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament for weight classes 152 to 285, which is voted on by the coaches, Ben Slaybaugh noted. White, in the 182-lb. class, beat D. Eguirres of WS by technical fall, then wrestled teammate Nick Hastings and won, pinned B. Taylor of CB and finished by defeating D. Creech of Union, to finish in first place.
The Pirates were also the team champions, besting second-place Wilbur/Creston/Keller and Union in third.

Braedyn White won all four matches and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament for weight classes 152-285.
In the 145-lb. class, Walker Flynn won four of five matches. He first pinned M. Vigil of WS, then won by fall over B. Casey of Tekoa-Rosalia. His only loss was by a decision to W. Wagner of Wilbur-Creston-Keller in the third match, but he rallied to beat Vigil again in the consolation bracket. He finished by pinning C. Billings of Tekoa-Rosalia in the fifth match for second place.
Lane Shawley won the other second-place finish, in the 138-lb. classification. First he beat C. Angstrom of Wilbur-Creston-Keller, but then was the loser in a decision to G. Martens of Union, Ore. Shawley finished with a pin on J. Gibson of White Swan.
Nick Hastings, competing in the 182-lb. class with teammate White, capture third place by splitting four matches. First Hastings pinned D. Eguirres of White Swan, but the next two matches were losses, first to D. Creech of Union and teammate White. He finished strong for an appearance on the stand in the third-place position with a win by decision over B. Taylor of Columbia-Burbank.
