Eastern Washington University has announced that a Pomeroy High School graduate has been named to the Dean’s List for the university’s fall 2011 quarter. Tyler Reisdorph was named to the academic honor. Eligibility is based on an undergraduate student earning 12 quality hours and receiving a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Thanks to the generosity of the Libri Foundation and Puget Sound Energy, Denny Ashby Library recently added 81 new books with a total retail value of $1,409.29 to the children’s collection. The Libri Foundation, a nationwide non-profit organization based in Eugene, OR, was established in 1989 for the sole purpose of helping rural libraries acquire new, quality, hardcover children’s books they could not otherwise afford to buy.

Fifty years ago

January 13, 1972

Work at Lower Granite Dam was shut down at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, and workers on the swing and graveyard shifts were also sent home because of the dangerously high winds and a power failure, although the winds subsided Tuesday evening. Dworshak Dam, in Idaho, was not closed down.

Silver dollars weren’t very popular here – a recent EW story said. That statement was a matter for disagreement. If you were a merchant or someone who handled money a lot, chances are you didn’t like the bulky coins. But if you were a farmer or rancher chances are you like them a lot. The term popular has a double meaning – several merchants interviewed in Pomeroy noted they hadn’t liked the coins – hence the coins weren’t very “popular” with them. But silver dollars circulated extensively in Pomeroy and Garfield County – hence they were “popular” coins here, even if some people didn’t like them

One Hundred Years ago

January 14, 1922

Garfield County this week has felt the grip of the most severe cold that has occurred in several years, the temperature dropping to 15 degrees below zero on Tuesday night and 8 below on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning at 8 o’clock the thermometer registered two above zero. The cold wave followed a snowfall of six inches.

The swimming pool project was again revived, when a meeting was held Tuesday, at the law office of G. W. Jewett and if the aid pledged by the persons in attendance indicates what the citizens of Pomeroy are willing to do this long-considered and frequently agitated addition to the city playground will be a reality by the opening of the next hot weather period.

Dog Hero Again Honored – “Stubby”, famous American Expeditionary Force mascot, was awarded by General John J. Pershing another medal in addition to his already long string of medals. It was a gold medal presented by the Humane Education society. “Stubby” was the official mascot of the American Expeditionary Forces and has been decorated many times, including medals from foreign monarchs. He wears two wound stripes, having been twice wounded on the battle field.
