Christmas Break and weather takes toll but Lady Pirates "gut out" win

January 13, 2022

POMEROY–The combination of Christmas Break and weather preventing some practices through the holiday vacation played a role but not a leading role for the Lady Pirates, who relied on composure, patience and free throws down the stretch to pull off a 35-31 win over DeSales here January 4.

The Lady Pirates hosted Touchet here last Tuesday, then Tekoa-Rosalia will visit on Friday for a league game. The team travels to Touchet Saturday for a non-conference game. Last Friday’s game at Oakesdale was postponed due to the host team members testing positive, said Toddette McGreevy, athletic director, and will be rescheduled.

Pomeroy is now 5-2 overall, 1-2 in league.

The Lady Buccaneers finished the first quarter with a 10-8 lead then played even through the second stanza for a 17-15 half time margin. The Lady Irish outscored Pomeroy 11-10 in the third period but the team toughed it out in the fourth for the 35-31 win.

“For not having been on the court for about six days, we played a tough, but tiring game,” Head Coach Tai Bye commented. “We struggled to find the gaps in DeSales’ zone tonight but after making some adjustments in the second half, we were able to feed the ball into Keely Maves more and open Jillian Herres up for some better shots.

Maves was hot from the arc, draining four three-pointers, with Chase Caruso nailing two and Herres swishing one.

“Chase Caruso stepped up as a leader tonight and really kept our tempo and demeanor,” Bye said. “We were starting to lose our stamina by the end, so the girls really had to gut out this win.”

“I was pleased with their composure and patience in the final minutes of the game,” Coach Bye commented. “We hit some free throws when we really needed to hit them and those makes were able to seal the win for us.”
