Senior Braedyn White put this spectacular move on Davenport wrestler Sam Schneider in his third match of the state tournament. Earlier, White won a match against Marcus Beck of Kalama by technical fall (16-0) and lost the opening match to the eventual state champion. White finished his high-school wrestling career one place away from a podium appearance.

TACOMA–Pomeroy High School's pair of wrestlers who competed in the 33rd WIAA Mat Classic here last week finished with identical 1-2 marks and were just one place short of finishing in the top four and reaching the podium.

"They wrestled their guts out against some stiff competition but came up short of the podium," commented Head Coach Ben Slaybaugh.

Pirate wrestler Curtis Winona finished the season with competition at the 33rd WIAA Mat Classic in Tacoma, going 1-2 and just shy of the podium. Winona had Bayron Rodriguez of Toledo tied up and won the match by decision. Senior Braedyn White capped off his career with his third appearance at the Mat Classic, Slaybaugh said. "Braedyn dropped to 0-1 after the first round, losing to a very tough kid from Forks." That wrestler, Hayden Queen, pinned White at 1:12 and went on to take first in state in the 182-lb. weight class.

"He absolutely put a hurting on Marcus Beck from Kalama, winning by tech fall 16-0," Slaybaugh said. "The next round didn't go as well with him losing by major decision to Sam Schneider 0-8 to finish his season.

"Braedyn has had a good run and a great high school career that he should be proud of," he said.

Like White, Curtis Winona lost his first-round match 0-7 to Damion Soto of Toledo and then rallied to beat Bayron Rodriguez of Toledo in a 13-1 major decision, Slaybaugh said. "Curtis handled him the entire match and was relentless in his attack," he said.

Winona's next match didn't go as well, and he fell short in another hard-fought match 0-7 to Clayton Jeanneret of Chewelah.

"Curtis is a great kid and works hard, we expect big things from him next season," Slaybaugh said.
