Keely Maves was selected to play for the All-State 1B team, which played the 2B All Stars last weekend in Seattle. Unfortunately, Maves sustained a shoulder injury in softball practice and was not able to participate. She was also honored by sports writers as MVP of the 1Bs at the state tournament.

POMEROY––Lady Pirate Senior Keely Maves has received honors since helping her team bring home a fourth-place trophy from the State 1B Tournament earlier this month.

Maves was selected to play in the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Senior All State Games in Seattle, as a member of the 1B team, and she was chosen MVP of the 1B girls’ tournament by media members participating in a poll conducted by Scorebook Live.

“I thought it was a really cool honor to be selected to play with the best in the state,” Maves said. Sadly, she wasn’t able to play in the 1B v. 2B game last weekend at King’s High School in Seattle due to sustaining a shoulder dislocation during softball practice.

Maves would have been coached by Jeff Droog, Head Coach of the 1B State Champions, Mt. Vernon Christian, and would have been joined by Oakesdale’s Kaylee Hinnenkamp, Gar-Pal’s Kenzi Pedersen and Maci Brantner, and Colton’s Lola Baerlocher.

The Lady Pirates lost by four points to eventual state champion Mt. Vernon Christian in the Regional round of basketball prior to the tournament in the Spokane Arena.

She is also amazed that sports writers named her Most Valuable Player of the 1Bs at the state tourney. “I thought it was crazy to be named MVP of the state tournament,” Maves commented. “It felt like such an honor. It made me feel that all the hard work these last four years have come full circle.”

Maves was voted MVP by participating media, and reported by Scorebooklive.com. Guard Jillian Herres made the All Tournament Second Team.

That website’s selections for All Tournament First team included Payton Torrey, Mossyrock; Maggie Meyer, Colton; Kenzi Pedersen, Garfield-Palouse; Allie Greene, Neah Bay; Allie Heino, Mount Vernon Christian. Second team: Jillian Herres, Pomeroy; Emma Droog, Mount Vernon Christian; Oceana Aguirre, Neah Bay; Karsen Brashears, Wilbur-Creston-Keller; Mackenzie Arden, Wilbur-Creston-Keller.

Maves’s softball injury is behind her and she’s back in action on the diamond.
