Lady Pirates fast-pitch season off to rocky start

March 31, 2022

PALOUSE–The Lady Buccaneers split a double header with the Garfield-Palouse Lady Vikings last weekend, losing the opener 10-3 then rallying in the nightcap with a big sixth inning for a 10-9 win.

Pomeroy faces Liberty and Prairie this week and rounds off the pre-Spring Break schedule with a Saturday double header at Liberty Christian. Play resumes April 12 at DeSales.

“In the first game, we fought hard and came up short,” said Head Coach Sonia Hevener of the opener at Gar-Pal. “We made some crucial errors that cost us the game.

But the Lady Pirates weren’t done yet. “We had a tough first inning and gave up several runs, but Keely Maves had a brilliant pitching performance that kept us in the game,” Hevener said. “Our girls made some adjustments, were aggressive at the plate and rallied for the win.”

In the season opener at Asotin on March 12, Elizabeth Ruchert hit a home run in the third inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Asotin’s ten-run first inning and 11-run third in the 27-4.

“Our bats were silent and we gave up a lot of free bases,” Hevener said of the loss to Asotin. “We are making improvements daily.”
