June 2, 2022

DEER PARK–Pirate junior Chase Caruso finished the two-day state golf match here in second place and brings home a medal as WIAA 1B Girls Golf returned after a two-year COVID delay May 24-25.

Caruso fired a career best 78 on day two after an 83 on day one of the State tournament in Deer Park last week, said Head Coach Al Damron.

"I had a great season and really enjoyed all the courses I got to golf at," Caruso said. "I really appreciate everyone's support throughout the season and I can't wait for next year."

Chase Caruso set a new low score for 18 holes at the 1B State Golf match last week, carding a 78 on the second day, and finishing second after a spectacular 2022 golf season.

"Chase was very consistent both days, tee to green, and putting as well," commented Damron. "Her scores from sub-district and district earned her the P1FCU Prep Athlete of the week the week before."

Caruso's personal best 78 was eclipsed by a phenomenal 69 shot by Emma Worgum of La Conner High School.

For the boys, Brady Bott finished in a tie for 27th place with a two-day total of 182.

"If not for some unfortunate things, he could have finished quite a bit higher," Damron said.

Jett Slusser barely missed the cut for day two but still played well, the coach noted.

Kiersten Bartels traveled with the team as District 9 girls alternate but none of the golfers dropped out so she didn't get to play, but had a great experience, seeing some really good play, Damron said.

"Our season ended with some valuable experiences for all the kids and high hopes for the future," he added.

Golf program's awards night will be 6 p.m. June 6 at the golf course.
