With the year 2022 distinctly in the rear-view mirrors of Garfield County, Pomeroy and its residents, we offer this look back at the previous year and those events, activities and other newsworthy happenings that appeared in the pages of your community newspaper, the East Washingtonian.

January 6: The Garfield County Board of Commissioners signed an agreement to match a grant from the Washington State Department of Agriculture Fair Project. The grant amounts to $81,000 and will be used for capital projects.

The Garfield County Fire District No. 1 Board of Commissioners approved a $25,000 transfer from their investment fund to their cash-on-hand account. The transfer is to keep cash-on-hand at its regular amount of $100,000. The GCFD received donations from Larry Bunch and, in memory of Charles Woody, from Ladonna Crawford for its ambulance fund. They also received a donation from the Laurence Gilbert Estate.

January 13: High winds caused damage to several businesses and homes in Pomeroy on Friday, January 7. The old Cardwell store lost a window and both the Pomeroy Food Bank and the Community Trunk suffered severe water damage from a roof leak. A sizeable piece of roofing was found in front of the East Washingtonian office and small bits of concrete can be found on the sidewalk up and down Main Street.

Wind gusts of up to 50 m.p.h. downed a spruce tree in Julie and Kent Dunkle's High Street home's front yard Friday. Unusually high winds coupled with wet ground conditions from recent snow melt created the right conditions for the 150-year-old spruce tree to fall diagonally across 2nd and High Streets, stopping traffic. The tree measured well over 90 feet, missed surrounding buildings and avoided injuring any human or animal, but pulled internet, telephone and power lines down, leaving 52 homes without power for several hours.
