A Teen's Take

The Joy of Giving

February 6, 2020

POMEROY–I truly understand what it feels like to do things for other people and make a big deal over them. Yes, I am polite and open doors for people and give gifts on Christmas, but this week was different.

A couple of friends and I took the time to plan a surprise birthday party for my best friend. It took a lot of time to plan. We called her parents to make sure we were okay with the plans, shopping, and discreetly asked about favorites.

I was super stressed when the day finally came; we were cleaning, decorating, wrapping, and getting ready all at the same time. It was all worth it when she came up the stairs to my bedroom and was completely shocked when we yelled “Happy Birthday!”.

Honestly her expression made it so much better and getting to spend the birthday weekend with her, watch movies, and pig-out on junk food was so great. We especially needed it since we were all pretty stressed out.

My friend and I don’t always see eye-to-eye, but that’s OK–I wouldn’t change her for the world. I don’t even know why we get along so well, but we do. All I know is that she’s my best friend every day and having someone like that is the most important thing in my life. You can have a great job or get good grades, but none of it would be as fun if you didn’t have a friend to laugh with, much like we did in the earliest hours of that birthday sleepover morning. I can’t get the image of her smile when we surprised her. I’m just thankful to have such a great friend.

I hope everyone is having a great week and for some, at least tolerating the outcome of the Super Bowl.
