A Teen's Take

May 14, 2020

POMEROY–As a teenager, Mother’s Day is a lot harder than when I was little. Now, nobody takes me shopping to find that perfect gift and I have to wrap whatever I get myself. That’s tough stuff right there–just kidding! I actually look forward to Mother’s Day because it’s a chance for me to spoil my mom the way she spoils me.

This year, with having the Stay-at-Home order and since I don’t have a driver’s license yet, it was nearly impossible to get over the hill to shop for my mom. Ingenuity was my default and to my surprise, I was able to come up with things she really enjoys and spent absolutely no money. I included my little brother in the planning and execution of this Mother’s Day gift, which he takes the credit. But what is a younger sibling for anyway? I don’t mind. I usually do all the planning while he does his own thing, but I don’t mind, he’s pretty good company.

We did a similar thing with my grandmother as well. We delivered her gift, leaving it on the doorstep, returned home where we received a video-call from her thanking us for her gift and how much she loved it. It was definitely weird not being able to talk to my grandparents face-to-face.

This Mother’s Day was obviously very different for many of us and it will be a time we will remember how we expressed our love in different ways.

I hope you enjoyed the warm spring weather and your Mother’s Day was thoughtful and memorable during this distancing time.
