The Community Scholarship

By Olivia Meyers, Anna Dinsmore and Byron Stallcop

Nowadays, pursuing a higher education is a financial burden on many. The Community Scholarship was created last year by Alex Bremer, who did it with her classmates Avery Ruchert and Wyatt Flynn. We took this project over this year because we wanted to help and encourage our classmates to further their education after high school by providing another local scholarship opportunity. Our goal was to raise a large sum of money with the support of our awesome community, all of which would go into a scholarship fund that our classmates could apply to. Our entire project led up to a dinner for all community members to attend, where the students from the class of 2020 would present themselves and their future plans to parents and the citizens of Pomeroy. This dinner was scheduled for March 28th, but unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless, we sold raffle tickets for five wagons that were donated by local businesses, and we received a grant from the Bezos Family Foundation. With great support from the community, we raised a total of $3,750.00! The scholarship committee consists of community members who will choose five, community and school oriented, Pomeroy seniors to each receive a $750.00 scholarship. We are extremely proud of this project and what we have accomplished.

We send our appreciation to the following businesses for kindly donating the five amazing wagons we sold raffle tickets for: Lewis Clark Credit Union, The Bank of Eastern Washington, Meyers Hardware, Obenland and Low, and in collaboration, Coleman Oil, Idaho Forest Group, and John's Saw Service.

We would like to acknowledge the following businesses for graciously donating to our project after we had to cancel our dinner event: Pomeroy Grain Growers and Flynn's Electric

We would like to recognize Storey's Tire Factory for donating multiple car services, which we never auctioned off, but the support was very much appreciated.
