Three 2020 seniors, Alyssa Wolf, parents Chris and Kim Wolf; Sydney Watko, parents Dave and Ginger Watko; and Maddy Dixon, parents John and Laura Dixon, organized the Beat Diabetes/Shoot for Shriners Basketball Tournament last November, raising $4000 to put toward Diabetes Foundations at St. Joseph Hospital, the Shriners Hospital burn recovery unit and camp opportunity for about 20 kids.

Our senior project is a fundraising basketball tournament for charity. We raised money for the Diabetes Foundations at St. Joseph Hospital and for Shriners Hospital. The tournament was Saturday, November 23, 2019. It was a girls' basketball tournament for grades three through eight. To successfully run the tournament, we needed to reserve both gyms, contact teams, make schedules, get volunteers to work, and get a supervisor to monitor the courts. Twenty-three teams to participated in the tournament including a few teams from Pomeroy.

We raised $4,000 which is a higher amount than the last few years. This money help build the burn recovery section of Shriners Hospital. It will also help send kids to Camp Stix and Camp Twigz which are summer camps for kids with diabetes. The money we raised should send about 15-20 kids to these camps.

The Cup of Hope came to support us and Pomeroy Grain Growers, LCCU, Deadman Creek Outfitters, and Obenland and Low donated different items allowing us to raise more money without having to spend our own.

Running this tournament has been a tremendous learning experience for each of us. It has brought us closer to the community members and younger generations. We look forward to seeing how this tournament continues in the years to come.
