A Teen's Take

July 2, 2020

POMEROY–Working takes much of my time which limits getting together with my friends harder. I am trying to be responsible, but I also want to be with my friends. You can’t always do both. I like what I am doing, it keeps me active and gets me out in the public. But my friends, on the other hand, don’t like that they only get to see me when they come to the pool to swim and I am lifeguarding. I still have one or two nights a week to hang out with them, but they say I am wasting my youth. I guess it depends on perspective. Working, to me, is a way to develop my work ethic and helps me prioritize and organize my schedule so I have time to see my friends. Working is a way to my future. I make connections with new people and develop some skills on the way. I am constantly looking towards the future, and I am glad I have a job to give me some experience in something that might come in useful in that future. So, I don’t mind putting in the time.

I do, however, understand the flip side of the argument. I will never have my high school years again and it’s important to savor friends while they are here. It is difficult sometimes balancing making life-long-memories with friends and working hard toward my future. I guess this is one of those lessons working a first job gives kids.

I hope everyone is excitedly awaiting the Fourth of July. Have a fantastic week!
