POMEROY––Pirate Golfer Chase Caruso, who until this season, was last seen in competition as an eighth grader in the 2019 State Tournament, has been a stand-out in the first three golf matches played this covid-shortened season.

Caruso, a sophomore led the field when the covid-shortened season opened March 29 at Walla Walla Veterans Golf Course, shooting a 45 in the nine-hole match, according to Al Damron, Assistant Golf Coach. At that event, Brady Bott carded a 61 to finish in the middle of the pack, in his first-ever golf match.

Golfing at Wine Valley on March 31, Caruso again finished ahead of the field with a 44 on the course's challenging back nine holes, and Bott scored 67.

The most recent match, held April 14 at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland, was a blustery, windy day, challenging all golfers. Caruso played 18 holes and finished with a respectable 90, Damron said. Bott improved with 108, "thanks to a great back nine score of 48," Damron said. Joining the team after junior-high basketball and after just one practice, eighth grader Jett Slusser shot a 114.

Covid restrictions have altered the original schedule and the team's next outing is today, April 22, at the Walla Walla Country Club, tee time 3 p.m. The final regular match will be April 28 at Wine Valley and a 1:30 tee time. A championship match is under planning in May.
