National Day of Prayer

April 29, 2021

POMEROY–In observance of National Day of Prayer, Garfield County invite community members to gather at the flagpole at the Garfield County Courthouse to unite with people of all faiths across the United States in prayer for our nation and leaders on Thursday May 6 at 12 p.m. The theme is from 2 Corinthians 3:17 which states, "Lord, pour out your love, life and liberty."

Representatives of Garfield County's churches have met to plan for this observance in Pomeroy at noon on May 6. All are invited to gather around the flagpole on the courthouse lawn and pray together for our nation. Especially lifted in prayer will be the workplace in America, the men and women in the military, the family, education, the church, art, media and entertainment, and the government.

Many members of the individual churches will commit to one half hour of prayer on a "prayer clock." Garfield County members have been known to pray while driving their tractors, sitting in their cars while at the Spokane Livestock show, driving to work, in the privacy of their homes or getting together with others to share the half hour.

From the Continental Congress in 1775 up to this day, there has been a time allotted for prayer for our nation. President Abraham Lincoln called for a day of prayer in 1863; President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in 1952; and President Ronald Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as National Day of Prayer.
