POMEROY–Quilts of Valor were awarded to Ron Harrison and Sonny Harper by Alice Gwinn and Cindy Klaveano on April 18, 2021.

Ron Harrison enlisted in the Airforce in November of 1975 and went into active-duty April 6, 1976. He was sent to Lacklund AFB, San Antonio, Tex., for six weeks of boot camp. He was then assigned and sent to Chanute AFB in Illinois for Tech school as a welder, heat treating, and chemical plating specialist. Upon graduation six weeks early, he went to Big Springs AFB, Big Springs, Tex. Due to lost hearing in his left ear, Ron was honorably discharged.

Elvin, (Sonny), Harper, served in the Naval Seabees from 1954 until he was drafted in the US Army in Boise, Idaho on May 11, 1958. He did his basic training in Fort Ord, Calif., for 16 weeks. He was then transferred to Aberdeen, Md., for further training. Sonny spent six months at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. At that time, he was transferred to Mercury, Nev., where they were testing the atomic bombs in 1959. He served there the rest of his tour of duty. He was discharged May 10, 1960.

The two veterans are connected not only through their military service, but Ron Harrison is Sonny Harper's son-in-law.

The two quilts were pieced by Cindy Klaveano and quilted by Alice Gwinn. They are now included in the over 271,000 quilts awarded to veterans by the Quilts of Valor Foundation since 2013.
