Health District needs another board member

May 27, 2021

POMEROY–The Garfield County Health District announced the addition of a board member as required by new Foundation of Public Health Services regulations at their monthly meeting on May 24. This addition must be completed by January of 2022.

Two resolutions were passed. Resolution 2021-11 removes a task from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program that has been found unnecessary. Resolution 2021-12 is an interlocal agreement between Garfield and Columbia Counties where Columbia County will provide a Grant Administrator. County Commissioner Justin Dixon was not in favor of this resolution, citing his wish to keep grant funds in the county. The resolution contains a clause allowing Garfield County to terminate the agreement, which the Health District intends to do when they have found an administrator to add to their staff. The resolution was passed to allow immediate action.

A Walk Across America event has begun for students in the Pomeroy Elementary School. The Health District partnered with Pomeroy Partners for Healthy Families to provide pedometers, which the students will use in a class competition to get the most steps. A map has been made with a step equivalent of miles between locations and prizes will be awarded the winning class.

Stay Active for Independent Living, a program that focuses on balance and strengthening exercises to prevent falls, has opened. Senior citizens represent the majority of participants.
