Inside the brain of fiber optic internet

June 10, 2021

POMEROY–The Port of Garfield County Board of Commissioners walked through the fiber internet Point of Presence during their meeting on June 1.

The Point of Presence is a room where the main line of fiber connects to the cables that distribute throughout Pomeroy. Each home has its own yellow cable labeled with its address that plugs into a board connected to the internet provider. Hundreds of these small cables are organized into lettered sections. Power backups consist of a row of batteries as well as a propane generator.

The Port Commissioners also discussed decorative maintenance on the United States Forest Service building. The grounds have been mowed and trimmed, and will be mulched where necessary. The interior of the building has been updated by repainting, laying a new carpet, and decorations which include vintage Smokey the Bear advertising and pictures taken in the Umatilla National Forest by Forest Service employees. Measurements for new blinds have been taken.

Business at the Pataha Creek RV Park is booming, with calls for new reservations nearly every day. Reservations have been booked out to August.

Installation requests for the fiber internet have slowed dramatically as most people who want it now have the fiber installed.
