POMEROY–Local FFA member Kendall Dixon was chosen as a National FFA finalist for her Agri-Science fair project; while others honed livestock evaluation skills placing as first-place team.
The FFA Agri-Science fair event recognizes student researchers studying the application of agriculture scientific principles. Dixon chose to evaluate the hair growth in show steers given the application of two different hair growth sprays commonly used on show steers. She completed this project throughout the course of 2020–21, compiling the data and the outcome into a multi-page research paper. She then presented those results to the Washington State FFA judges, where she placed first in the Animal Systems division.
This qualified her project to be sent on to the National Level. She submitted her report, which earned her the title of national finalist, or one of the top eight in the nation in the Animal Systems category. Dixon then presented her project to the judges virtually in September.
The fair season gave opportunities for the Pomeroy FFA members to compete in livestock evaluation contests, honing their livestock assessment skills. They evaluated classes of breeding and market beef, sheep, swine, and goats according to USDA market grades and cutability. The students not only place an animal in numerical order, they must qualify their decision by giving oral reasons for their selections.
