Lady Pirates rally to win five-set match over Tekoa-Rosalia

October 28, 2021

ROSALIA–Bouncing back from the effects of coronavirus, which cut about half of the team out of contention for about two weeks, the Lady Pirates put together a gutsy five-set win over Tekoa-Rosalia with six matches remaining in an accelerated final week of the regular season.

On the schedule down the home stretch is an Oct. 26 double bill with Gar-Pal, an Oct. 27 Senior-Night match versus Tekoa-Rosalia and an Oct. 28 double header at St. John. Remaining to be played is a postponed match against Colton from Oct. 22, due to shortage of officials, said A.D. Toddette McGreevy, and may be rescheduled Saturday or Monday, depending upon officials.

The Lady Pirates are 8-4 overall, 2-2 in league with these six matches to squeeze in before district play commences November 2, 4 and 6.

At Rosalia October 23, the Lady Pirates won the first two sets handily, 25-11 and 25-12.

"At the end of game two, we had an injury that changed momentum and really affected our team emotionally," commented Head Coach Adam Van Vogt. "We were able to come back in game five and play like we did early to secure the win."

Tekoa-Rosalia evened the match at 2-2 with a third-set score of 25-21 and fourth-set score of 25-17. Then Pomeroy notched the 15-7 fifth set for the win.

Leading Lady Pirates were Jillian Herres with 26 assists, 20/21-95% serving with five aces, Keely Maves with 13 kills and 13 digs, Katie Boyer with 18 digs and four aces, and Elizabeth Ruchert added nine kills.

The Lady Pirates traveled to Oakesdale, losing in three sets October 20, 25-7, 25-6, 25-11.

"Unfortunately, we didn't have the whole team back as half of the varsity was still in quarantine," Van Vogt said. "We played them with a varsity-JV combo team."

"Even though the scores indicated a rough night against Oakesdale," Van Vogt said, "I was proud of the attitude my girls had. We went in with the mentality that we wanted to get touches and use the game to try and get momentum for the rest of our schedule. I believe we did a good job of that. We got a lot of touches and worked on playing together as a team after two weeks off.

"I think it showed through when we played Rosalia," the coach noted. "We used the touches we got against Oakesdale and two practices to get off to a very strong start in that match and I thought we played really well early on after missing two weeks to quarantine. We served and serve received well and used our defense to ignite a strong attack and never really let Tekoa-Rosalia get going."
