A meeting will be held on Tuesday December 6, for residents interested in providing input on the curriculum for Pomeroy School District’s Pataha Creek Alternative School. The discussion will also explore online learning opportunities.

For several decades, Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce’s annual Holiday Bazaar, held this year in the basement of Pomeroy Baptist Church, has been a favorite way for local shoppers (and a lot of out-of-towners) to find that one-of-a-kind handmade gift.

The Pomeroy High School Class of 2012 selected the Seeley Theatre and Opera House as their Project Citizen this year, and will be partnering with the Pomeroy Community Center. Some of their projects include working in the flower beds, cleaning out the back ally, cleaning and sweeping out rooms, repairing and replacing seats, and painting the entrance and downstairs rooms, restoring woodwork, rebuilding staircases, and designing the new front sidewalk.

December 4, 1996

The Pomeroy Rebekah and OddFellow lodges are offering juniors at Pomeroy High School the opportunity to participate in the international organizations’ United Nation Pilgrimage for Youth program. A student from Pomeroy will be among the 21 from the state who will be among over 500 students to participate. This is the first year a Pomeroy student will be involved.

FFA and 4-H steers will be weighed Saturday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 14 by Larry Wilson and Dave Bragg. Weigh in time is 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Weigh-in dates are later than usual this year due to a rule change at the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane.

Fifty Years Ago

December 2, 1971

Five very lovely and talented senior girls have signed up to participate in this year’s Pomeroy Junior Miss Pageant: Julie Price, Kayleen Gingerich, Connie Crawford, Connie Bartels and Coni Wolf. The winner will compete in the State Pageant scheduled to be held in Pullman on January 19-22.

School officials said this week that stray dogs on the school playground are becoming a hazard to smaller children, and the only solution appears to be capture of the dogs by local police. According to the school officials, the dogs, sometimes five or six at a time, interfere with the children’s play and are at times dangerous.

Several Pomeroy students will be included in the 1971-72 edition of “Who’s Who in American High Schools.” Nick Waldher, Ray Ledgerwood, Julie Price, Kayleen Gingerich, David Harrison, Eric McKeirnan and Paul Weimer have been asked to submit their biographies for inclusion in the annual directory of students.

December 5, 1946

Kenneth Price and Robert Dye, Garfield County 4-H club members, are winners of outstanding state and national awards, it is announced by Phillip Bloom, county agricultural extension agent. Kenneth Price is the winner of the state and western region’s national 4-H meat animal contest, sponsored by Thomas E. Wilson of Chicago. Robert Dye was selected as first alternate in the state 4-H achievement contest.

Transfer of ownership of the largest body of Garfield County farm land in a long time was arranged for recently when P.C. Donley contracted to buy the property known as the Dan Smith ranch, situated about eight miles northeast of Pomeroy.

One Hundred Years Ago

December 3, 1921

Announcement was made yesterday from the office of the Northwest Wheat Growers’, Associated, of the organization of the Farmers’ and Banders’ Finance Corporation with a primary capital stock issue of $5,000,000. The corporation will have headquarters in Portland, and is organized to provide credit for agricultural producers in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California.

A bridge luncheon of 15 covers was given by Mrs. W.L. Meyers Tuesday evening, the guests being Mr. and Mrs. L.N. Knettle, Mrs. E. F.Benson of Olympia, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. McCabe, Mr. amd Mrs. John Gilbert, Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Cardwell. Bridge honors fell to Mrs. Knettle and Mr. Cardwell. Later in the evening dancing to music furnished by the Misses Meyers.

The stages have changed to their regular winter time schedule, leaving Pomeroy in the morning and arriving at night.

Alpowa Ridge is all right now-a-days. We have a fiddler, a blacksmith, and a horse trader. A preacher would find this an inviting field.

Joe Burton brought to Albany, Or., the other day, from Burton creek in Lynn county, a handsome buck which dressed 140 pounds. He reports deer running thick in the foothills. This fellow came trotting down the trail and refused to stop when Burton hailed him, receiving two shots when at close range and falling within reach of his Winchester.
