Pirates face Sunnyside Christian at District

POMEROY––Like their Pirate maties, the Pomeroy boys landed in third seed to District, opposite Sunnyside Christian, in a game set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in Sunnyside, following a rough final weekend where Pomeroy (9-8, 6-3) suffered three losses, one in overtime.

Win or lose at SSC, in the second round Pomeroy will play either No. 4 Yakama Nation or No. 1 Oakesdale, a 69-61 overtime winner over the Pirates Feb. 2. The winner or consolation game will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the highest seed. The third-round game will be 6:45 p.m. Feb. 18 at Dayton, or 6:45 p.m. Feb. 16 in the consolation bracket, at Dayton. Winner of the championship game goes to state; winner of the consolation bracket plays the loser of the championship game 6:45 p.m. Feb. 19.

Trevin Kimble was hot with a game-high 25 points and five threes, but visiting SSC cobbled together a mini run before halftime to hold a 34-27 lead and tacked on five more in the third for a 61-49 non-conference win Feb. 2.

“We had a couple turnovers and let them have too many offensive rebounds,” said Coach Chris Wolf. “We played hard defensively tonight and took much better care of the ball.”

At T-R Feb. 4, T-R was on a rip for their Senior Night, outworking and outhustling Pomeroy.

“We didn’t defend very well and turned the ball over 21 times tonight,” Wolf said.

Gwinn led with 24, Ollie Severs had 12 and Kimble added 11, Wolf said.

As Yogi Berra famously said: “It was déjà vu all over again” for the Pirates in their 69-61 loss to Oakesdale Feb. 2. “It was almost a carbon copy of the game we played a week ago,” Wolf said.

“We struggled to score in the fourth quarter and missed some opportunities to take control of the game against them,” he said.

Ollie Severs sank two free throws with three seconds remaining to tie the game after the Buccaneers, who trailed by five at half, held a 48-45 third-quarter lead. Oakesdale outscored Pomeroy 12-4 in overtime.

Kimble again scored 25, Gwinn hit 12 and Trace Roberts had 11 points.
