March 31, 2022

CLARKSTON–Pirate Track and Field launched the spring campaign with a good showing at the Southern NE 2B meet here March 23. The Pomeroy Boys were third behind second-place Asotin and Davenport, and the Pirate Girls were fourth, with Davenport in third, Garfield-Palouse in second and Clarkston taking top honors among the nine schools competing.

The season will resume after Spring Break with a Tuesday, April 12 meet at Lybecker Field.

Colton Slaybaugh commences his fourth year as a Pirate pole vaulter, and he cleared 14-0 for first place. Juniors Sidney Bales, Braedon Fruh and Tyler Bagby were second, third and fourth, respectively.

Bales captured first in the 200 m. and second place in the 100.

Raelin Borley finished first in the javelin, and Katie Boyer cleared 7-6 for first in the pole vault. Borley was second in the shot put and discus.

“There was great competition for our first meet of the year,” commented Head Coach Adam Van Vogt.

Slaybaugh is a favorite to lead the state in pole vaulting, Van Vogt said. “Colton Slaybaugh has the best pole vault in the state of Washington regardless of classification at 14-0,” he said. “Sidney Bales has the 3rd best at 12-6.”

Personal best times or marks included Bagby in the 100 (14.5), Josh Kepner in both the shot put (30’) and long jump (15’9”), David Tejero in discus (89’), Trevin Walton in javelin (80’9”) and long jump (15’5”), Raelin Borley in discus (89’), Katie Boyer in the 200 (34.34), and Natalia Larios in long jump (9’8”), Van Vogt said.

Slaybaugh had the fastest 100 on the day but did not record an official time due to a timing error. Haliee Brewer placed in all four of her events, making her one of the few athletes in the meet to do so. Raelin Borley and Sidney Bales finished top two in three events, “a fantastic accomplishment,” Van Vogt said.
