POMEROY––Its first league double-bill canceled last Saturday due to a scheduling issue, the Pomeroy Pirates headed into Spring Vacation after a pair of non-league wins over Liberty Spangle and Prairie. The Pirates are 5-2 overall.

The Pirates downed Prairie 18-14 at Shepherd Field on March 31, and earlier edged Liberty Spangle 6-5 on March 29.

Last Saturday's double header at Liberty Christian was canceled and the Pirates will take the diamond next on April 14 in a home stand double header against Sunnyside Christian. Pomeroy played another non-league single header April 5 versus Asotin. Game info will be published next week.

Richie Vecchio had a hot bat in the 18-14 win over Prairie last week in Pomeroy. Vecchio nailed three hits, and four other teammates-Brodie Magill, Trevin Kimble, Ollie Severs and Gunner Magill-each had a pair of hits.

Pomeroy jumped on the Pirates of Prairie with four runs in the first inning, but a big third inning gave visiting Prairie a 5-4 lead.

They grew the difference to 8-4 with a three-run fourth inning, but Pomeroy rallied with four runs in the bottom frame to tie it 8-8.

Prairie added six runs in the fifth to lead 14-8, but the Pirates kept hitting and running, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth and six more in the sixth.

Then it was up to Trevin Kimble, who relieved Brodie Magill in the fifth inning, to keep Prairie off balance and he finished with a zero for Prairie in the top of the seventh. Severs started on the mound and was relieved in the third by Vecchio. Magill relieved Vecchio in the fourth.

The Pirates beat Liberty Spangle 6-5, rallying with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win on March 29.

Both teams duked it out to a draw through the first three innings.

Then the Pirates broke the ice with four runs on the bottom of the fourth, taking a 4-0 lead.

Liberty answered with a run in the fifth, and took the lead with four runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-4 lead.

That's when the Pirates rallied with two runs in the bottom frame for the 6-5 win.

Leading hitter for Pomeroy was Severs with three, including a double, and Kimble included a two-bagger with his two hits. Vecchio hit two and Pirates Roberts, Ledgerwood and Lemont each hit one.
