New sales tax for emergency communications equipment to go on August ballot

POMEROY–The Garfield County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) approved a sales tax ballot entry; resolution 2022-14; payment of $414,338.70 to Poe Asphalt; and other business at their meeting on May 2.

The tax approved for the August ballot is two tenths of 1% on sales, the funds accruing from which will be used exclusively for emergency communications equipment. The projected revenue expected averages $105,321.13 a year. The tax will go on the August primary ballot, to be approved or rejected by Garfield County voters.

The BOCC passed resolution 2022-14, creating a sign-on bonus for the Garfield County Sheriff Office. The bonus will be paid to applicable recruits in halves, 50% on their first paycheck and 50% after the first year of service and probationary period. Entry-level positions can receive up to $2,000 and Lateral and Intermediate Lateral Deputy positions can receive up to $4,000.

Payment was approved for a bill from Poe Asphalt for $414,338.70, for contractor work on the Upper Deadman paving project. The bill will be turned over to Washington State for reimbursement.

The BOCC approved the 2022 contract between Garfield County and Aging and Long-Term Care Council of Government for $455, allocated to a Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

The commissioners declared May as Older Americans Month, to recognize the contributions of Garfield County's 893 older citizens.
