Lady Buccaneers bow out after dropping twin bill at Colton

COLTON–A chance to continue the softball season slipped away earlier this week as the Lady Pirate Fast-Pitch team dropped a pair of games to the Lady Wildcats.

Pomeroy softball finishes its season with a 4-8 record and won’t see further play in the District 6/7/9 1B Regional Tournament.

The Lady Wildcats won 9-4 and 16-4 in Colton.

“We played hard, but left too many runners on base,” said Head Coach Sonia Hevener. In the second game, “Colton capitalized on all our defensive errors. We got some solid hits but not enough to keep us in the game.”

Hannah Bagby hit a two-run home run in the nightcap.

At Sunnyside Christian on April 30, the Lady Pirates split with a 12-6 win in the opener and a close 9-8 loss in the nightcap.

“We showed a lot of heart,” commented Coach Hevener. “We never gave up and secured the win in the seventh inning.”

Keely Maves threw a good game, giving up just two hits, and the Pirate defense was sharp with just three errors.

Maves went two of five at the plate with five RBIs.

In the second game, Sunnyside rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 9-8, extra-inning win.

Pomeroy scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7 then held Sunnyside Christian scoreless to go into the eighth inning.

The Lady Bucs scored a run to lead 8-7, but weren’t able to keep the lid on Sunnyside, who scored two runs in the bottom frame for the win.

“The Pirates worked hard at the plate to tally up 12 hits,” Hevener said. “But we lacked some confidence on the defensive side. We are a young team that has come a long way thus far.”

Hot in the batter’s box was Elizabeth Ruchert, going three of four at the plate with an RBI and a two-bagger. Maves went two of four batting with two RBIs, a double and a triple.

Maves threw to catcher Jillian Herres, giving up just five hits.

Versus Tekoa-Rosalia on April 26, the Lady Bucs ten-runned them in the first game 10-0 and went seven innings in the second game, winning 16-9.

Maves and the defense were error free in the opener, shutting out the Lady Timberwolves and also throwing a no-hitter.

Maves was three for three at the plate with a double and a triple, and Hannah Bagby had an RBI. Elizabeth Ruchert went two for three batting.

“We did an awesome job being aggressive at the plate,” Hevener said.

In the second game, Coach Hevener praised the team for its confidence in the batter’s box, and was happy with the team’s persistence. “We fought through our defensive errors and finished strong,” she said.

Tekoa-Rosalia matched the Pirates in the first inning, 4-4, but the Lady Bucs took the lead 9-7 after two innings and then punched through six runs in the fifth inning to secure the win on ten hits.

Maves nailed two doubles and had an RBI. Gilbert had two hits, including a double, and Ruchert had a double and three RBIs.
