Pirate Track zeroing in on Regionals

May 12, 2022

POMEROY––With the 1B District 6/7/9 Regional Championship meet ahead, Pirate runners, jumpers and throwers who qualified–and there is likely to be quite a few–gave stellar performances at a pair of meets at Lybecker Field: the League Championships on May 3 and the Pirate Battle at Twilight on May 6.

Regionals are coming up on May 20-21 at Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane (results of the District 7/9 meet will appear next week).

Seven teams joined Pomeroy for the Pirate Battle at Twilight, Valley Christian’s boys and girls both finishing in first. Pomeroy boys were second and the girls fourth.

State-leading pole vaulter Colton Slaybaugh continues his quest for a state meet appearance, clearing 14-0 in the last two meets.

At Lybecker Field May 3, Colton Slaybaugh, Katie Boyer and Haliee Brewer each placed first in their four events. Colton now ranks in the top 10 statewide in five events, and is first overall in two: the pole vault and 4X100 Relay.

Boyer placed first in pole vault and fifth in long jump, and ran a leg in both relays. Brewer was in pole vault, long jump and the relays.

Personal best accomplishments were set by John Michel Ames in javelin (99’3.75”), Braedon Fruh in the 100 (12.61), Rylan Hays-Carnahan in shot put (25’5”) and javelin (76’9.5”), Trevin Walton in the 100 (12.59) and triple jump (34’6.5”), Ivan Weatherspoon in discus (61’8”) and Raelin Borley in shot put (34’3”). Raelin finished in the top 4 in all three of her events.

At the annual “Twilight Invite,” where teams come from all over to compete in the evening and into the night, personal best accomplishments were set by Tyler Bagby in the 100 (13.08) and triple jump (32’6”), Josh Kepner in the 100 (13.10), Samuel Lamb in the 100 (13.54), David Tejero in the shot put (29’3”) and javelin (86’3.5”), Michael Thorson in the 100 (13.69), Greg Weatherspoon in discus (65’7”), Raelin Borley in discus (101’3”), Michealle Debord in the 100 (15.13) and long jump (12’6”), Sophia Phelps in the 100 (18.09) and 200 (37.12), and Bethany Zimmerman in the triple jump (25’1.5”).

Bales, Boyer, and Brewer placed in all four of their events. Boyer finished first in two of her events (pole vault and long jump) and top three in all four events. Bales placed first in two of his events (200 and 4x1) and top three in all of his events. Tyler Bagby, Colton Slaybaugh, Tyler Slaybaugh, Braedon Fruh, Raelin Borley, Michealle Debord, and Bethany Zimmerman placed in three events each.

“This is a great accomplishment at an invite and Tyler Bagby added personal best finishes in three of his events, marking one of his strongest meets to date,” commented Head Coach Adam Van Vogt.

“This meet was a fun meet that added co-ed relays, a thrower’s relay, and even a coach’s relay to the twilight setting,” Van Vogt said. “Kids got to dress up in costumes and have a great time while competing. It’s a great way to close our regular season and was a blast to watch the kids and community have such a great time.
