RITZVILLE–The Pirate Boys, on the strength of numerous firsts, seconds, thirds and more, out-pointed a field of 18 teams at the District 6/7/9 Championships/Regional Qualifier here Saturday, tallying 103 points and sending ten boys on to Regionals along with six Lady Pirate thinclads, who finished eighth out of 22 teams. The Regional meet will be at Ridgeline High School in Spokane this Friday and Saturday, May 20-21.

“We also had the most combined points of any team at the meet,” said Head Coach Adam Van Vogt.

“To do so well at a meet with so many teams is quite an impressive feat for this group of athletes and I am proud of all of them,” he said.

Leading the Pirate attack was Colton Slaybaugh, who counted firsts in four events: the 100 m. dash, pole vault, long jump and as anchor for the 4X100 Relay. He sprinted the 100 in 11.65, cleared 14-4 in the pole vault, long jumped 19-0.75, and the 4X1 Relay was in 46.10.

Of the pole vaulters, Pomeroy boys held all spots except fifth and place after ninth.

Sidney Bales counted a trio of second places: the pole vault at 12-0, 11.90 in the 100 and 24.75 in the 200 m., and was on the first-place 4X100 Relay team.

Katie Boyer won the pole vault, clearing 8-0 to advance. Boyer was on both relay teams, the girls’ 4X400 finishing fourth in 4:52.22 and the 4X100 fifth in 56.51.

Thrower Raelin Borley goes to regionals in the discus and javelin with fourth-place finishes, and sixth in shot. Her discus mark was 100-10, the javelin throw 93-7 and the shot distance 30-11.

Braedon Fruh counted two third places, tied in the pole vault at 12-0 and tossed the javelin 139-9. Fruh led off the first-place 4X1 relay and the sixth-place 4X4 team.

Troy Steele advances in the shot and discus, placing fourth in the shot at 38-4.75 and ninth in discus, 88-2.

Tyler Slaybaugh was fourth in the 100 with an 11.99 time, a PR. He PR’d in the pole vault in sixth place with a 10-6 mark. He ran the third leg of the first-place 4X1, and he was anchor of the sixth-place 4X4 team.

Tyler Bagby had personal bests in the pole vault, a fourth place at 11-6 and the long jump, a regional-qualifying eleventh place at 15-10.5. “To set PRs in the most pressure-packed meet of the season is a great accomplishment,” Van Vogt said.

Haliee Brewer vaulted 6-6 for sixth place, and was a member of both 4X1 and 4X4 relays, fifth and fourth places, respectively.

Bethany Zimmerman triple jumped a qualifying 12th place with a 25-0.5 distance, and was on both relays.

Eighth grader Kyzer Herres qualified in three events, setting a PR in the 400m dash with seventh place in 57.06, a sixth-place with the 4X4 relay team and a seventh in the pole vault, 9-0 for another PR.

“Kyzer’s 400m time of 57.06 is the fourth best time in that division and his seventh place overall time in our region as an eighth grader is a very significant achievement,” Van Vogt said. “He has also cut three seconds off of his time in the last two weeks.”

Trevin Walton goes to regionals on the sixth-place 4X4 team, plus eighth in the long jump at 16-6 and tenth in the triple jump at 35-8.5, a personal record.

Natalia Larios finished seventh in the pole vault at 6-0. Michealle Debord goes on as a member of both girls’ relays.

Levi Bowen, an eighth grader, heads to regionals with an eighth-place tie with Tyler Matheny in pole vault with 8-6.

Twenty-two Pirate athletes qualified for this meet, including John Michel Ames, David Tejero, Cash Copher, Rylan Hays-Carnahan, Samuel Lamb, and Josh Kepner.
