Irish defense stifles Pirates

WALLA WALLA–DeSales chalked up 28 unanswered points before the Pirates were able to notch their first touchdown and its defense was formidable as the Irish handed the Buccaneers a 54-22 defeat here Sept. 8. Pomeroy is 1-1 in non-league play

Due to the fair, this week's non-league game is Thursday, September 15 at Ritzville against Entiat with a 6 p.m. kick off.

The Irish looked to Joe Baffney's and Sean Sollars's rushing talents to tally 326 yards on the ground, and Baffney completed eight of 18 passes for 44%, 103 yards and two touchdowns. DeSales counted 429 yards of total offense, 103 yards through the air.

For the Pirates, the first touchdown by Walker Flynn from 12 yards out put the Bucs on the scoreboard just before halftime. Flynn punched in the extra point.

But DeSales started the third quarter with two more touchdowns to keep the game out of reach. First Baffney completed a 20-yard pass to Carter Green for six, then Jake Wilson had a pick six of a Trevin Kimble pass.

Later in the third quarter, Pomeroy scored two touchdowns. Sid Bales rambled in from the seven for a touchdown with 6:20 on the clock and he ran the two-point conversion. A few minutes later, Kimble connected with Ollie Severs for a nice 48-yard scoring strike. Kimble's PAT run was stopped.

The Irish tacked on one more touchdown, a 57-yard breakaway by Sollars to cement the 54-22 win.

Defensively, the Irish countered Kimble's passing efforts with five interceptions. He completed six passes for 99 yards and the one touchdown to Severs.

DeSales put up two touchdowns in the first quarter, a 10-yard Baffney run, plus Baffney's PAT run.

Both teams were grappling through the middle minutes of the first quarter but Caden McCollaugh pulled in a 31-yard pass from Baffney for the 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Sollars punched in from the six, then tacked on the two-point conversion. Baffney got loose for a 28-yard run to paydirt.

With just a minute and 13 seconds remaining in the half, Walker Flynn crossed the goal line on a 12-yard run. Flynn took in the two-point conversion for the 28-8 halftime score.

The Irish adjusted in the third and piled up three more scores in a minute and 45 second span: Baffney breaking away for a 53-yard scoring run; Baffney connecting with Carter Green for a 20-yard touchdown and Wilson intercepting Kimble and running it back for six points and a 46-8 lead.

At 6:20 in the third Sidney Bales rumbled over the goal line from the seven yard line, and he scored the point after. Three minutes later, Kimble hit Severs for a 48-yard score but the two-point run was squelched at it was 46-22.
