Letters to the Editor

To the editor,

Where has the sportsmanship gone? Since we moved to Pomeroy a couple years ago, I'm surprised and disappointed to see how our Pomeroy football team continues to run up scores week after week. I don't see it with other sports but football really stands-out, maybe there is history with teams piling on points in the past and we are embracing an eye for an eye mentality but we really should raise our standards. Why does the coaching staff continue to play their A squad when they have a 45+ point lead, maybe it's always been this way and I not accustomed to it.

It's lack of sportsmanship in my opinion to beat a team 66-0 and continue to play your A squad when you are up 6 touch downs. This comes a week after beating Yakima 86-0, really it just shows no class and should never happen when a team can't even manage to score. When does it stop?

Last year we saw several blow outs much like this and now continuing to see it again this year, what does it prove and why is tolerated? Shouldn't coaches be responsible enough to ingrain sportsmanship into these young athletes through their actions? Disappointing to observe how this behavior is accepted and it's just seems classless to continue to pile on points when we clearly are in control a game. It makes me wonder why these teams would even continue to agree to play us, it appears most of these schools don't have the kids turning out for football like Pomeroy does.

At some point I would hope that the school principal would take a hard look at how this is reflecting on our school, town and these athletes. It's embarrassing and we should demand better, we have a wonderful community and great support for our student athletes, let's class it up.
