Jr. Hi Pirates win opener against T-R

POMEROY––The Junior High Boys Varsity Basketball Team squared off with Tekoa-Rosalia to start the 2022 season on November 10.

This game was sloppy as T-R was inexperienced and out matched. Pomeroy's defense forced the Timberwolves into some sloppy play and raced to a 28-3 halftime lead and never looked back.

"The boys did a solid job of working together on both ends of the floor," commented Coach Brock Ledgerwood.

Conrad Nelson led in scoring with 10 points and had a great night rebounding, Ledgerwood said. Tyler Dixon scored 7 points and played a solid defensive game.

Scoring for the varsity squad was Dixon 7, Rory McKeirnan 3s, Nolan Newberg 6s, Braxton McKeirnan 6s, Cayle Mullins 2, Vinny Vecchio 2, Nelson 10 and Robbie Van Vogt 2. Kole Zimmerman also saw floor time.

Pomeroy ran into a much tougher opponent in Asotin November 14.

"The Panthers came out firing and we struggled to get in a groove on both ends of the floor," Ledgerwood said. "We left Asotin open numerous times and they connected on five three-point shots on the way to a 27-8 half time lead. I felt we were getting some good shots offensively, but we could not get them to fall."

The second half was much different game as the Pirates came out confident and ready, Ledgerwood noted, sparked by Braxton McKeirnan, who scored all of his game high 18 in the second half

"Seeing Braxton hit some shots lifted our confidence and sparked us on the defensive end," Ledgerwood said. "We were able to cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter, but Asotin stopped our run with their sixth three point shot of the game and stretched out to a 50-35 win.

Rory McKeirnan dropped in nine points and had some good assists to help our offense get going, the coach said.

"We learned a lot about our team in this one and feel that we can ride our solid second-half performance into the next game," Ledgerwood said. Playing against Asotin was Dixon, R. McKeirnan 9, Newberg 4, B. McKeirnan 18, Mullins, Vechio, Nelson 2, Van Vogt 2, Sam Wolf, and Zimmerman.

The JV Pirates defeated Tekoa-Rosalia 40-16, led by Treyton Kimble with 15 points.

The Jayvees beat Asotin 20-19 November 14.
