Pomeroy's 6-2 junior forward, Ollie Severs (12), led Pirate scoring with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, always keeping Colton on the run.

SUNNYSIDE–A big third quarter for Sunnyside Christian was too much for the Pirates to overcome as the Crusaders took a 61-52 non-league contest here last Saturday. At home on Friday, Pomeroy blasted past the Colton Wildcats 66-32 in a league counter.

The Pirates traveled to Moses Lake for a two-day Christmas tournament earlier this week, then will break for the holiday, returning to the home maple on December 29 against Dayton-Waitsburg.

The Pirates took an 18-8 lead in the first quarter, then Sunnyside Christian bounced back to nearly tie it 27-26 at half time in Saturday's loss.

"We got in foul trouble in the third and had some trouble matching up with them," said Head Coach Chris Wolf. "We fought hard in the fourth quarter and got within six points but we couldn't quite get over the hump."

Sunnyside went on a 21-4 tear in the third quarter, to hold a 14-point lead, 47-33, at the start of the fourth. The Pirates won that quarter 21-14, but couldn't muster the points to completely catch up.

Ollie Severs led Pirate scorers with 21 points and added 5 rebounds. Trevin Kimble had a great all-around game with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Severs was hot the next night against Colton, pumping in 21 points in Pomeroy's 66-32 drubbing of the Wildcats at home.

The Pirates got off to a "rough start," Coach Wolf said. The Wildcats finished the first stanza leading 11-7. Wolf subbed in a few of his junior varsity "swing" players to start the second quarter.

"They set a tone defensively with the way they played," Wolf said. "They played extremely hard and gave us some energy with steals in our press. They saved us from being down at the half.

"In the second half our Varsity played with the right attitude and effort, and it showed," he said. "We won the third quarter 29-6 and created turnovers that led to transition baskets."

Severs included 11 rebounds with his game-high 19 points, and Kimble poured in 18, plus swiped nine and has six assists and rebounds. Brady Bott scored 13. The team made six of nine three-pointers.

"Colton really played hard," Wolf said, "and I hope our boys learned the lesson that we have to play hard for 32 minutes every game."
