KITTITAS–At the Coyote Classic here last Saturday, Pirate wrestler Curtis Winona dominated the 182-lb. classification, taking all three matches for first place.

Coming up for Pomeroy Wrestling is the League Dual Championships at Almira-Coulee-Hartline Janury 28. Earlier matches was a girls-only match at Rogers on January 24 and the fourth league meet at Reardan on Jan. 25.

"Curtis had a great day against three tough opponents," said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh. "He dominated the 182-pound bracket to finish first place."

Winona first dispatched Avey of Ellensburg with a pin, then repeated against Montgomery of Ellensburg, finishing with a pin of Aurrolla of Sunnyside, Slaybaugh said.

Peyton Cannon and Nick Hastings both competed hard, Slaybaugh noted, but were eliminated prior to the medal round.

Cannon, 160-lb., lost by technical fall to Reyes of Sunnyside, was on the short end of a decision against Mulvaney of Highland and was pinned by Woody of Sunnyside.

In the 190-lb. class, Hastings lost by fall to Colonga of Eastmont and to Ramirez of Ephrata.

On January 19 at a league meet in Ritzville, the Pirates encountered tough league competition, Slaybaugh said.

"Curtis battled it out with league rival Jesh Qwik of Liberty again," Slaybaugh commented. "Curtis is wrestling him very tough but hasn't been able to pull off the win yet."

Winona prevailed in a decision over J. Matherly of Liberty then was pinned by Qwick, also of Liberty, in the 182-lb. division.

"Nick Hastings is having a good senior season notching another win," Slaybaugh said. Hastings, in the 195-lb. class, lost by fall to C. Durbin of Reardan but bounced back with a win over K. Goldsmith of Reardan.

"Peyton is showing tremendous improvement over his freshman season, helping him to 2-0 on the night," Slaybaugh said. Cannon, in the 160-lb. division, pinned S. Holberg of Davenport then prevailed over C. Truesdale of Davenport.
