District tourney comes to Pomeroy Saturday

Curtis Winona puts a decisive move on a Davenport wrestler at the Reardan match January 25. At the match, Winona won both of his bouts and the 182-lb wrestler also beat both opponents Saturday in Coulee City, and is headed for the District Tournament in Pomeroy Saturday.

COULEE CITY–The Pirate Wrestling team concluded the season with a third-place finish in a dual meet here Saturday, January 28, winning duals over Reardan and Tekoa-Rosalia, and having a good showing at a Reardan League match January 25.

Coming up Saturday is the South Division League and District tournament, with the action beginning at 11 a.m. in the Pomeroy Gym. The top four wrestlers out of District advance.

The Pirates competed their final regular season meet of the year, a team dual tournament, at Almira-Coulee-Hartline High School, said Head Coach Mat Slaybaugh. "Pomeroy finished third as a team winning duals over Reardan and Tekoa-Rosalia."

Curtis Winona again battled league rival Jesh Qwik of Liberty-Spangle, Slaybaugh said. "The match was tied 7-7 when Qwik injured his ankle during a shot by Winona, resulting in an injury default," Slaybaugh said.

At the dual meet, 182-lb. Winona won by injury default over Qwik, then pinned McGloughlin of Reardan.

In the 195-lb. class, Nick Hastings was pinned by Roberta of Liberty then defeated Mendoza of Reardan to go one and one on the day.

Peyton Cannon, in the 160-lb. division, lost to Hollins of Liberty and Widman of Liberty.

Teams competing in the dual meet were Reardan, Liberty, Tekoa-Rosalia, Gar-Pal, Colfax, Northwest Christian, Lind-Ritzville-Sprague and Davenport.

At Reardan, detailed results were unavailable except that Winona and Hastings won both of their matches and Cannon was 1-1 on the day.
